About 5 years ago, I mentioned to my brother in law, should he ever decide to get a new vehicle, to let me know how much he wanted for his 2004 Lexus RX 330. He mentioned the conversation to me last weekend, and said he was starting to see what he liked, and asked if I was still interested. I am.

Here’s what I know, I’d like to add what any of you know regarding these vehicles. Good, bad, or otherwise. I’ll find a few Lexus boards as well, but oppo experience is always welcome.

2004 Lexus RX 330

88460 miles as of last weekend, about 6318 miles/year.

All maintenance was performed at the dealership where purchased with receipts.

No modifications of any type, no accidents.

Just buy it. Even if it’s not the Hybrid. I wrote this piece last week actually.

My friend at school has one. It’s got headlight washers. If you’re from a cold area, watch out for rust near the battery (her car is from Alaska). Otherwise it’s a nice car ESPECIALLY ONE WITH THAT LOW OF A MILEAGE. I have a 2003 GX with 108,000 right now and I thought **I** had a low mileage car.

I’ve got an ‘04 RX330 with 237,300 miles on it right now and I absolutely love it. We got it with 82k, and it has had most of the common issues. As far as I know, the things to look out for are the power steering rack, catalytic converter, wheel bearings, and radiators.

On mine, the rear wheel bearings had to be replaced right when we got it. It’s had the radiator replaced twice. The power steering has had a slow leak for awhile and ended up running dry twice. As far as I know, the pump still is fine, it’s just a bit louder than it was. We lucked out with a big leak in the power steering since a line could just be replaced vs the whole rack being replaced. Oh, and the transmission on mine slips, but there’s a TSB for it that’s never been applied. But apart from almost stranding us because we ignored the spark plug service interval, it’s been extremely reliable. Here’s the most recent sort of overview of mine: https://oppositelock.kinja.com/the-grocery-grabber-and-i-are-celebrating-20s-1793255209

The short version: It’s so practical. Power is great from a stop, could be better at highway speed, but not slow by any means. Gas mileage could be better. The luxury touches are so nice to live with. The stereo is good. The AWD system (if applicable) is fantastic in the rain and snow. Overall, it’s not exciting, but it’s fantastic to live with. I can’t recommend it enough, especially since you know the history of that one.

Thanks for the link, and great job on the article. Two 40 mph couch potatoes in the back is more than my current Golf could handle, I’m sure of that.

We literally moved more furniture in ours again last night haha. The only thing that you need to check is the front axle boot. It leaks. The Lexus dealer we bought my wife’s from replaced it as a condition of purchase. I wouldn’t necessary do that to your brother but maybe split the cost. Other then that, we have no issues.
